Affiliate marketing programs have never been more popular than they are today.  Why?  There could be several explanations for this.  The most likely reason, though, is that the benefits of affiliate marketing are now evident to more people than they were previously.

Today, it is easy to understand how affiliate marketing can benefit both retailers and affiliates. Today, merchants perceive affiliate marketing as a low-cost approach to advertising their products. Affiliates, on the other hand, see affiliate marketing as an easy way to generate money online while doing what they enjoy most: building websites.

As the popularity of affiliate marketing has grown, so has the public's perception of it.  Affiliate marketing is no longer seen as an alternate strategy for merchants to advertise their items or as a source of additional income for affiliates.  Affiliate marketing is currently regarded as a primary source of income and revenues for both merchants and affiliates.

So the issue is, which sort of affiliate marketing is ideal for you?  Are all affiliate marketing programs created equal?  Are the advantages the same?  Or are there affiliate marketing programs that are more effective than others?

There are various sorts or classes of affiliate marketing, and the number of types depends on how they are classified.  However, the most basic affiliate marketing programs are divided into two categories: pay-per-click (PPC) and pay-per-performance (PPP).

• PPC (Pay Per Click)

PPC is the most common method of affiliate marketing for affiliates with small websites, and it is also the most straightforward way for them to generate money.  In this sort of affiliate marketing, the merchant pays his affiliate every time a visitor is referred to his site, that is, every time someone clicks on the merchant's banner or text ads.  The affiliate is compensated even if the visitor he suggested does not purchase from the merchant's website.  However, typical PPC affiliate program costs are minimal, rarely surpassing a dollar per click.

• Performance-based pay (PPP)

PPP affiliate marketing is the most popular among merchants and the most profitable for affiliates.  In this sort of affiliate program, the merchant only pays the affiliate when his referral results in an action—that is when the visitor he suggested purchases something from the merchant's website or becomes a lead.  This results in significant savings for the merchant.  However, it becomes the most profitable type for the dedicated affiliate, with commissions in PPP affiliate marketing typically ranging from 15% to 20% of the actual product sales.

There are two types of pay-per-performance affiliate marketing: pay-per-sales (PPS) and pay-per-lead (PPL).

o PPS (Pay Per Sale)

In a pay-per-sale affiliate marketing model, merchants pay the affiliate a set fee whenever a visitor referred by the affiliate purchases something from the merchant's website.  Pay-per-performance affiliate marketing is classified into two types: pay-per-sales (PPS) and pay-per-lead (PPL).  However, regardless of the fee's basis, it is typically more than the charge paid to affiliates in a pay-per-click affiliate program.

o PPL (Pay Per Lead)

Pay-per-lead affiliate marketing is a subtle version of PPS marketing and is commonly utilized by insurance and finance organizations, as well as other businesses that rely on leads to thrive.  In this style of affiliate marketing, the affiliate is compensated every time a visitor he sent to the merchant's site fills out an application form or any other form linked to the company's business.  Compensation for this sort of affiliate marketing is based on a fixed fee with rates similar to those of the PPS type.

Aside from these three categories of affiliate marketing, there are numerous other types of affiliate marketing.  Affiliate marketing can be classed as single-tier, two-tier, or multi-tier based on the depth of the affiliate network.  Another sort of affiliate marketing pays the affiliate every time a customer suggests purchasing something from the merchant's website. 

• Affiliate Marketing: Single-Tier, Two-Tier, and Multi-Tier

These sorts of affiliate marketing are based on the affiliate network's several degrees or tiers through which payments are made.  Affiliates in a single-tier affiliate marketing program are solely compensated for direct sales or traffic sent to the merchant.  All of the previously described affiliate marketing types (PPS, PPL, and PPC) are classified as single-tier.
